As you know, in my holistic practice I focus on getting to the root cause and healing from within through nourishing food, movement, stress management, quality sleep, and proper mindset. However, over the past couple years I have begun incorporating essential oils into my toolbox of healing therapies - and have experienced firsthand the freedom essential oils can give us from physical, mental and emotional imbalances.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are naturally occurring compounds that change quickly from their solid or liquid state to a gas at room temperature. These compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants, and give plants their distinctive smells. Essential oils protect plants, aid in plant pollination, and have been used for centuries in food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices. Different compounds in different plants are what give essential oils their varying aromas and benefits - in fact, over 3,000 different volatile aromatic compounds have been discovered to date!
Before I started using essential oils, I thought they were a little “woo woo” and, to be honest, thought they were kind of a scam. Once I began using high quality oils like doTERRA, I realized I was totally wrong - and those little bottles have changed my life in the best way. Quality DOES matter, so most of the oils you’ll find in the grocery store are highly diluted and full of fake fragrances. I use doTERRA exclusively and they are one of the few brands I trust completely. If you want to read more about their sourcing, click here.
how to use essential oils
Diffusing essential oils is one of the best and simplest ways to quickly shift your mood while also reducing the need for toxic fragrances within your home. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system by way of the olfactory nerve. The limbic system supports our emotions, behavior, and memory.
Other ways you can use essential oils aromatically:
Apply oil to a cotton ball and place in the air vents of your vehicle
Mix oils in a spray bottle with water and mist over furniture, carpets and linens
Add oil to a batch of laundry or to dryer sheets/balls
Use in household surface cleaners
Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils; because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they stay in the applied area for a localized benefit. You can increase the effect of an essential oil and decrease skin sensitivity by applying it with a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil. One or two drops of essential oil mixed with a small amount of carrier oil is all you need for an amazing effect within minutes!
Beneficial areas you can apply essential oils:
Forehead and temples
Chest and abdomen
Arms, legs, bottom of feet
Other ways you can use essential oils topically:
Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath (one of my favorites)
Make a hot or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to desired area
Add oil to a lotion or moisturizer and then apply to skin (I do this with my tallow balm)
Certain essential oils can be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions (and have been used this way for centuries). When ingested, essential oils directly enter the bloodstream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are fat soluble, so they are readily transported to all organs of the body - including the brain. Then, like all things we consume, essential oils are metabolized by the liver and other organs are then excreted.
Effective methods of internal application:
Use oils in recipes, just as you would regular spices (I always prefer the actual herb, but this is helpful if we ever run out of anything and don’t feel like going to the store!)
Remember that essential oils are much more potent than dried or fresh herbs and spices, so start with a very small amount
For more potent oils, it may be better to administer them by toothpicks (dip the end of a clean toothpick into the oil and then add to the food) rather than drops
Add essential oils to water, smoothies, milk, tea or other drinks
Take essential oils internally in a veggie capsule or add to a small amount of applesauce or yogurt
