my top 10 essential oils

Essential oils have become a huge part of my life over the past year or two, and for good reason. I have begun incorporating them into my daily routine, and now I can’t imagine life without them! Before I got into oils, I turned to over the counter medication for most things like stomach aches, headaches, allergies, mosquito bites, the list goes on. Now, while medication certainly still has its place on occasion, I first turn to my oils nearly every time.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are naturally occurring compounds that change quickly from their solid or liquid state to a gas at room temperature. These compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants, and give plants their distinctive smells. Essential oils protect plants, aid in plant pollination, and have been used for centuries in food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices. Different compounds in different plants are what give essential oils their varying aromas and benefits - in fact, over 3,000 different volatile aromatic compounds have been discovered to date!

Before I started using essential oils, I thought they were a little “woo woo” and, to be honest, thought they were kind of a scam. Once I began using high quality oils like doTERRA, I realized I was totally wrong - and those little bottles have changed my life in the best way. Quality DOES matter, so most of the oils you’ll find in the grocery store are highly diluted and full of fake fragrances. I use doTERRA exclusively and they are one of the few brands I trust completely. If you want to read more about their sourcing, click here.

I compiled a list of my favorite essential oils - the ones I use on nearly a daily basis. Honestly, it was tough to come up with only 10! I also need to point out that while these are the oils that work best for me and my daily lifestyle, everyone is different and has various needs.

Without further ado, here are the 10 essential oils I can’t live without:

Peppermint

Honestly, if I were only allowed one oil with me at all times, peppermint would be the winner. This oil has so many benefits. If I have an upset stomach or am feeling bloated, I either rub it directly on my stomach or take a big whiff straight out of the bottle, and both work well. Peppermint also works really well as an afternoon pick me up, for those times when I really want to reach for some coffee or sugary treat and need some energy. I put a drop or two in my hand, rub them together, and take a big whiff. Another great use for peppermint is putting it directly on my temples when I have a headache. It works wonders!

Wild Orange

Wild orange is one of the most exquisite smelling oils, in my opinion. A couple sniffs straight from the bottle (or diffused) is enough to lift my spirits tremendously. When I’m feeling a little rough or tired in the morning, say, after a night of drinking, wild orange perks me right up! It’s also a great way to add a little pep to your water.

Bergamot

Bergamot is a very unique oil in that it has the ability to be both uplifting and calming at the same time. This oil has done so much for my anxiety and sense of self worth. Anytime I am doubting myself or hanging onto overwhelming feelings of anxiety, I take a few deep sniffs from my bergamot bottle and instantly feel calmer and more self assured. This is absolutely one of my favorite oils, and I keep it in my purse at all times.

Lavender

Sometimes I consider lavender my gateway essential oil, because it’s the first one I ever owned, and the first one I fell in love with. Lavender is one of the most relaxing aromas, and is the first oil I grab when heading to the bathtub. Another use for lavender I have recently come to find is that it’s great for skin, so I use it as spot treatment on blemishes and also add it to my tallow balm.

On Guard

On Guard is doTERRA’s “protective” blend. It is one of doTERRA’s most popular oils, and for good reason. On Guard supports a healthy immune system, and protects against environmental and seasonal threats. It can be used in many ways - internally, diffused, as a hand soap, hand sanitizer, laundry soap, and my personal favorite, toothpaste! Not to mention it smells like an autumn dream.

Melaleuca

Melaleuca, also known as Tea Tree, is best known for its purifying properties. It can be used on the skin and nails, and can be applied to skin irritations like cuts or bites to soothe itching and swelling. My favorite ways to use melaleuca are to stop mosquito bite itches (when I forget to bring my lemongrass bug spray), and to spot treat any blemishes that come when I’ve had too much dairy or am feeling overly stressed.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is one of the oils I least suspected would become a favorite, but it’s powers are incredible! I initially got it to pair with clove and frankincense for a thyroid blend. On top of that, I found out lemongrass is a great mosquito repellent. Paired with TerraShield, doTERRA’s outdoor blend, it’s been the only thing that’s worked for me - and that says a lot. My nickname is “bug food.” Another thing I learned about lemongrass is that it’s extremely effective at getting rid of odors; a few drops in your laundry detergent will do wonders. I also made a room spray consisting of lemongrass and peppermint, and it works so well!

Frankincense

Frankincense is known as the “king of oils” and provides feelings of peace and grounding. I like diffusing frankincense when I need some extra strength and support. It also helps to rejuvenate the skin and reduce the appearance of blemishes, so it’s great to add to your favorite moisturizer or face wash (I use it in my homemade tallow balm!).

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is an essential oil that promotes clear breathing and relaxation, so it’s my go-to oil when I’m feeling under the weather. Just diffusing or sniffing out of the bottle can help with seasonal allergies, and taking a hot epsom bath with eucalyptus does great things for a cold. When my nose is stopped up, I like to put a few drops of eucalyptus on the floor before turning the shower on.

Serenity

Serenity is another amazing doTERRA blend and was created to promote peace and tranquility. I diffuse this next to my bed every single night and truly feel a difference without it. If I need some extra zen power during the day, I’ll keep it with me and take a few sniffs here and there. It’s truly a great oil to have around!
